Let me start with detonators for our nuclear IED, and start by the hydrogen burn off igniter (you might search it, and get lots of NASA shit) ...that are of less importance...keep in mind I know what I'm doing! This is an igniter for a methanol truck ....or a gasoline supplier, or a gasoline bomb station, this little baby for 11 euros, has two explosives, the primary with 250 mg of PETN and the high explosive with 375 mgr of RDX (miligrams...)
...and these scheme, are the all components, of the inside bomb. almost 70 years later...the shape remains the same, modifications, were the neutron initiator is now tritium (besides polonium 210 and beryllium, and pressed against gold foil, these is for reducing the amount of the critical mass, old "fat man" had 52 kilos of plutonium ) , the plutonium, is now replaced by uranium 238 (HEU) and uranium 235 (unprocessed) in amount of 5 kilos, the baratol is now replaced by lead styphanate (also works batter has low velocity, and charger of particles), the outsider primary explosive is now only RDX (the lenses blocks) , the aluminum is now alpha aluminia (zirconium), and the surrounding shape of the sphere , is still boron plastic. so, this is a the sphere for our bomb. (already said modern, can be made of graphite or beryllium ) so to reflect the neutrons (and reflexion will give it thousand of millions of velocity) , these are called "lenses". two types of explosives are used on the lenses, the RDX/TNT called cyclonite, outside the lenses (high velocity) ; and an explosive, inside the sphere, called Baratol (barium nitrate and TNT) , because inside the sphere we need a low velocity detonation explosive ; all of this was a coupled inside hydrogen. their nuclear bombs have a power detonation electronic system with 5 thousand volts, with 35 detonators devices. These sphere has a nucleus, called the neutron initiator, with polonium 210 and beryllium (build like yesterday picture) . So, this is called a tamper system. the lenses have this shape, as in optics to reflect light, in a convergent mode. (means, diamonds would be perfect, right? because it would generate thousand of light beams) however they are called "lenses" but only blocks of explosives, and not glass, is the shape which is in question.
