The first step is the hardest. We will burn that bridge when we come to it. Hatred is the madness of the heart. There is no great genius without a mixture of madness. A knowledge of men is the prime secret of business success. The best things in life are never rationed. Friendship, loyalty, and love. They do not require coupons. Friends are proved by adversity. Our greatest foes, and whom we must chiefly combat, are within. The wise are instructed by reason, average minds by experience, the stupid by necessity and the brute by instinct. The absent are never without fault. Nor the present without excuse. With God, what is terrible is that one never knows whether it's not just a trick of the devil. Nothing external to you has any power over you. I'm not a teacher: only a fellow-traveler of whom you asked the way. I pointed ahead -- ahead of myself as well as you.
