" Irak has been experimenting with radiological weapons.“At the end of 1987 the Al Muthanna State Establishment and the Nuclear Research Center at Al Tuwaitha began exploring the use of radiological “area denial”weapons to prevent enemy forces from entering certain territory. Iraq conducted field experiments of lead-shielded containers weighing 1,400 kilograms, loaded with about a kilogram of irradiated zirconium oxide. Three prototypes were tested in 1987, one in a ground-level static test and two dropped from aircraft. Iraq subsequently modified 100 bombs for use as radiological weapons. These bombs weighed only 400 kilograms so they could fit in bomb bays of aircraft. Iraq claims the tests were unsatisfactory and the program was abandoned in mid-1998. The fate of the 100 bomb casings specially constructed for use as radiological weapons is unknown” This was what the CIA had of Intel. And, as far as I understand, the "system" is trapped in hundreds of problems like this one!

In connection with a fusion process which can be initiated by a high energy input such as a laser beam, the use of a layer of uranium surrounding the fusion fuel such as deuterium-tritium or a non-cryogenic fuel such as lithium deuterium-lithium tritium. The uranium serves as a tamper layer to contain the fusion fuel and supplement the heating by a fission reaction which not only increases the fusion yield but increases the time of disassembly, thus materially increasing the efficiency of the fusion system.

ABSTRACT
Yield curves have been obtained for eight of the more important reactions of Li6 and Li7 produced by proton and deuteron bombardment in the energy range from 200 to 1000 kev. Each curve was obtained with an accuracy of about five percent, and a set of intercomparisons served to determine the relative yields between the different reactions within 20 percent. A special set of observations on a single reaction then gave the absolute yield for all the reactions within a factor of about three. An investigation was made of the reactions involved in the formation and decay of Li8, the mass of which was found to be 8.02499±0.00020. The range-distribution of the delayed alpha-particles from Li8 was measured and the interpretation of this distribution is discussed. Observations on the reaction Li6+n→He4+H3gave a value of 4.97 Mev for the reaction energy as compared to a value of 4.56 Mev derived from the masses involved. No evidence could be obtained for the production of Li8 by the process Li7+n→Li8. Measurements of the energies of the neutrons produced by deuteron bombardment of Li6 indicated that Be7 is formed by the reaction Li6+D2→Be7+n. Further experiments showed that Be7 is radioactive and is converted to Li7 by K-electron capture. It was found that this process is followed by gamma-ray emission in roughly ten percent of the transitions.
